Statewide Seasonal Events:
Summer Games in June include nearly 400 athletes, 1,000 volunteers, and hundreds of family members and spectators. Track & field, Basketball, Swimming & Diving, Power lifting and Gymnastics events are held in Anchorage.
Winter Games in March include nearly 200 athletes, 500 volunteers, and hundreds of family members and spectators. Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Alpine and Nordic Skiing events are held in Anchorage or another major Alaska city. Bowling Tournament in November includes nearly 200 athletes, 500 volunteers, and hundreds of family members and spectators at the event held in Anchorage or another major Alaska city.
Equestrian Tournament in August includes dozens of athletes and volunteers, and hundreds of family members and spectators at the event held in Anchorage. Law Enforcement Torch Run in May and June includes peace officers participating in local runs throughout Alaska, with the ceremonial final leg kicking off the Opening Ceremonies at Summer Games.
Golf Classic in July includes hundreds of golfing teams from all over the Anchorage Bowl.
World Games Sponsor-an-Athlete. Alaskan athletes can and do qualify to compete in SOI World Winter and Summer Games, which alternate every other year in cities around the globe. This international competition equates to the mainstream Olympic Games.
Selected Area Training & Competition Program:
As a year-round level sponsor, you may also choose to "adopt" one of Special Olympics Alaska’s local Areas. These grass roots programs are at the heart of Special Olympics. They represent the point of entry for athletes and families, and a local foundation that provides Training for Life. There are presently 16 area programs that provide training and competition within their communities : Anchorage, Central Kenai Peninsula, Dillingham, Haines, Juneau, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Kotzebue, Lower Yukon School District, Mat-Su, Seward, Sitka, Tanana Valley Unalakleet and Wrangell. |
