Special Olympics Alaska School Program

Special Olympics Alaska Presents:

2009 CAMP SHRIVER ALASKA
Special Olympics Alaska will host its third annual Camp Shriver July 27 - August 7, 2009.  Thirty athletes (campers with intellectual disabilities) from around the state will pair up with thirty partners (peers without intellectual disabilities) for two weeks and discover the opportunities and experiences of participating in a sports camp program. Camp Shriver is designed to introduce our program to potential athletes, therefore, students with intellectual disabilities that are not yet registered with Special Olympics Alaska will be given priority over returning athletes. There is no fee for participating in this camp.

Camp Shriver Alaska will be based at Wendler Middle School, in Anchorage, and campers will be selected from middle and high school aged athletes and partners. During the two week camp, campers will participate in a variety of sports activities, ranging from basketball to canoeing. An important aspect of the Camp is the high quality of the sports venues used for the activities. Campers will have the opportunity to participate in activities at the Alaska Rock Gym, The Dome, Tanglewood Golf Dome, Eagle River Nature Center, McDonald Ice Challet, and DeLong Lake.

Registration is now open. Please use the attached form and return it to the Special Olympics Alaska Athlete Training Center and Campus (3200 Mountain View Dr., Anchorage, AK, 99501). The registration deadline is May 8th, 2009. Registration will be accepted on a first come first serve basis until all slots are full. After the 60 slots are full, campers will be waitlisted.

Special Olympics Alaska School Program
Special Olympics Alaska School Programs provides opportunities for students of all abilities to learn, train and compete in sports and fitness activities alongside each other. Through school sanctioned clubs, unified sports, and classroom resources the Special Olympics School Program helps students learn about those who are different but who can nonetheless inspire greatness with their individual talents, gifts and personal contributions. This program promotes the benefits of fitness while providing opportunities to empower students and allow them to recognize their ability to make a difference in their world.

Special Olympics Alaska serves as a resource to the school in regards to sports clubs, fitness training and competition, educational support materials, and service learning opportunities. Special Olympics Alaska also serves as a connection/link between educators and students involved in the various programs. As we work towards aligning programs statewide, networking is crucial. Teachers and students with experience in Special Olympics in the classroom are a resource to those who are interested in learning how to implement it in their school.

The vision of the Special Olympics Alaska School Program is to be present in 53 school districts in the year 2006. All districts in Alaska will be introduced to opportunities for their schools through partnering with Special Olympics Alaska. Schools will be involved at the level they determine best for them.
