How do we make our schools more inclusive?

Topics of 2003 Student Summit on Inclusion

  1. Inclusive programming in rural areas of Alaska .
  2. Inclusive programming in elementary and middle school level education.
  3. Making change through education and communication.
  4. Providing opportunities for students with mental disabilities in school activities and sports.

As a result of the 2003 Student Summit the following barriers to youth initiated inclusion were identified.

  • Education and awareness
  • Development of attitudes and positive perceptions starting in elementary school
  • Adult support of student efforts
  • Communication between schools in Alaska (network to share ideas)
  • Discrimination within schools
  • Funding
  • Parental awareness and support
  • Informed and educated advocates to assist in the growth of Partners ClubsŪ
  • Development of Partners ClubsŪ
